The Atlantis Complex Artemis Fowl Book 7 Eoin Colfer 9781423128199 Books

The Atlantis Complex is somewhat of a weaker edition of the Fowl saga, although it's a little hard to explain why. The characters are the same as ever, which is a good thing, and the plot is still fun. Artemis is on a mission to stop global warming, but gets attacked by advanced fairy technology. Hijinx ensue. So what forced me to drop a star off the rating.

I think it comes down to the pacing. This book hits the ground running and moves at a breakneck pace, but that isn't a good thing when it means the villains and other story elements are underdeveloped. And believe me, the villains in this book come out of nowhere.

Contrast this to the 'the Lost Colony', where the demons also came out of nowhere to be villains. In that book, a whole chapter was devoted to explaining the new race of fairies existence, their culture, and introduce the characters without advancing the plot in any meaningful way. This book doesn't have that, and I feel like it needed it.

Still, the book isn't ruined, just flawed. You'll still like it if you've came this far in the series. Enjoy?

The Atlantis Complex Artemis Fowl Book 7 Eoin Colfer 9781423128199 Books Reviews

This thrilling series started out with a dangerous plot and all the books were anticipating, humorous and action packed until the Atlantis complex. It's obvious that the author mAde Artemis have Atlantis Complex so the story would have an extra depth to it. It just wasn't trilling enough. This might be a spoiler, but the whole plot of the book was about Julius roots brother wanting his wife to be younger and himself to be out of jail. That's not good enough. If I may say, pathetic. When I saw the Artemis fowl series getting bad reviews, I said " they expect to highly. He's doing just fine." Bug after reading this book, I'm not sure if I'm excited to read the last book of the series. When I was at a friend's house, all I could think about was Artemis fowl. And it took me 3 days tops to finish a book. Now it takes me more than a week and it barely passes through my mind. But this is my opinion. You might love it. There were some pretty epic, humorous and nice parts. Those are my post and cons. Thanks for reading!
Good themes about friendship and playing to your skills in the background of a fun set of characters and scenery, complete with wonderful skills, quirks and character defects. (The techno-centaur with the tinfoil hat to block invasive thoughts has to be my favorite although who couldn't bond with a flatulence jet propulsion dwarf - close second - and what girl couldn't love a girl commando who was the best pilot in class.) I read the series trying to find engaging, fun, and stimulating reading for my very preteens. The writing.is very well done with lots of tongue in cheek humor They can even get some vicarious life lessons in without breaking a tear out. I have a child with emotional disability and still has the right and wrong skills of a three year old in a ten year old body. This kind of story learning helps Bravo to Holly and Artemis!
I will amend this review once I have completed the book. However, at this time I would just like to note that paying $2.22 more for the digital kindle version than for the hard back version of this novel just really irks me to no end...or, more precisely, irks me to the point that I voice my complaint with the only customer feedback tool I have available to me an review.

That said, the digital version has missing words, poorly formatted paragraphs and mis-coded punctuation. All of this I can tolerate because I feel like I'm doing a good deed for Mother Earth, getting the product immediately, and avoiding the cost of shipping. Of course, the hardback ships for free using Prime but when I calculate the carbon footprint necessary to ship a 2 lb book all the way to North Africa, I just can't bring myself to save the money. At the same time, paying a two dollar premium for a crappier version of the real book is just incredibly irritating.

As promised, I am amending this review to reflect an assessment of the novel itself.

This is a novel somewhat darker than the previous ones offered in the series. I think Mr. Colfer was reaching for a particular mood (or perhaps even a shift in the tone of the series moving forward) that is somewhat more adult and mature. Artemis' problems reflect the end of his adolescence. As his struggles (while still identifiably Colfer in their zaniness), grow more serious, so does the tone of the narrative.

I wanted to pan this novel as being too great a departure from what made this young adult series so appealing. I wanted to accuse Mr. Colfer of "just mailing it in," but I've realized that the change in tone and the violence reflected in the story are intentional. I can't fault the author for going where his characters take him. Although I think many fans will find this novel somewhat unsettling, it is still a worthy read and I look forward to catching the next installment. I just won't be reading this one to my six year old.

My criticism of the kindle version remains in place and is the primary reason for the low rank. If a book is the sum of the narrative and presentation then a perfectly fine narrative was disrupted by sloppy editing and terrible formatting. The ebook is a legitimate format that is here to stay. The big publishing houses have absolutely no excuse for doing such a terrible job formatting and then charging such a high price premium. Shame on them.
