Wow. I had read reviews that this was a great book, but I was hardly prepared for just how amazing it was! It is well written (With Wrade's clever humor), a descriptive world, and creative character. As other's said, though not the most original story/plot line, the way characters go about it IS original and refreshing. I wanted more! I wanted to read about the characters and their adventures after it was all done. If I had to nitpick it, I'd say the villain does some things that doesn't always make sense to me, but I can forgive it since everything else was simply terrific! This is my second favorite book by Wrade (The enchanted chocolate pot will always be number one) and I will defiantly try and find more by her.

The Raven Ring A Lyra Novel Tor Fantasy Patricia C Wrede 9780812514322 Books Reviews
This just wasn't for me I guess. Something about the excessive dialogue and the adventure that could have taken place in so rich a setting and instead remained confined to the city was just disappointing.
The Raven Ring was enjoyable, but I kept expecting more. The story could have been part of a larger work. There just wasn't all that much going on. As it stands, it wasn't very satisfying. I wanted to hurry up and finish it so I could read a more promising book in my queue.
Really liked the story, I will probably try the other Lyra novels. I have always loved Patricia Wrede since I read her YA books to my kids. So not terribly surprising I found this one fun as well. Always love her strong female characters and strong story lines. My only complaint about this book was that it could have been much longer and more involved and even better.
I've read this story at least 5 times. It never grows old. Patricia Wrede weaves stories as spellbinding as any of the magicians she writes about. I love all of her novels, but this one is my favorite.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved the strong independent female heroine, Eleret. I really liked the cultures and the world the story was built in. The conflicts between the cultures and the customs of each race where believable not outrageous. I wasn't ready for the story to end. I'm going to download another from this series of Lyra novels.
This book has a great premise but it has little substance. She gets the ring, others want it. I guess it is part of a series, but this novel isn't very meaty. The novel had a lot of potential, but it left me wanting so much more, especially in the way of character development.
"The Raven Ring" is what I would call a traditional fantasy adventure. Magical object inherited by someone who does not know its powers, faerie magician (green eyes), noble born wizard, thief, evil sorcerer. If you like that kind of story (I do), you will enjoy "The Raven Ring".
The plot is well done, though not as tight as it might be. I found myself re-reading passages to see what was really going on. However, it all worked out in the long run. I want to say to the author that readers should not have to double-check to follow the plot, but for the most part she manages the flow of the plot quite adequately.
The characters were nicely done. Each one had his/her characteristics and pretty much the subsequent actions and words stayed in character (except for the Aunt who inexplicably became helpful). There were a couple of times when tense arguments were resolved by laughter, except that, re-reading the conversation, I could not tell what was so humorous or witty as to evoke laughter.
The city descriptions set in juxtaposition to the main character's lifelong experience in open mountain country were very well done. The way the character was uncomfortable with the crowded streets and the confined alleyways very nicely brought out both her character and the nature of the city.
SUGGESTION If you like to follow individual characters, their actions and motives, start a list of dramatis personae right from the start. There are lots of actors and keeping them straight can be difficult (thank goodness for 's search feature), especially when a character appears for a chapter, then disappears, only to be referred to in conversation a few chapters later. It's hard to tell, when a character is introduced, if he/she is going to be a major player or appear only as supporting cast.
Character and place names are easy to differentiate, except for the "C" ones Cilhar, Calmarten, Ciaron, Climeral, Charis. The other characters' names start with different consonants and are easier to keep straight.
If, on the other hand, you are person who reads a couple of novels a day, and are interested only in the story arc and the general idea of what's going on, then don't bother making a list of characters. Just skim and enjoy.
I liked this book and will read others by the same author.
