Volume one of the Dark Fate Chronicles.
An arranged marriage.
A lost heir to the dwarven throne.
An ancient undead seeks to manipulate four unlikely heroes.
Princess Sloane is to become a queen. Her marriage will unite the last two human kingdoms of Orundal. As it is not a marriage of choice but of necessity, she struggles with the responsibility laid before her, not knowing that the sacrifice she makes for her homeland will be but the first that she must endure.
Her twin sister, Princess Sacha, has been called from her studies at the Monastery to support Sloane in her time of need. Sacha has begun to learn the ways of the arcane and deals with her own troubles concerning the loss of a family that has been taken from her.
The sisters will not face their fates alone as Erik and Kinsey, steadfast companions, become their guides.
Erik seeks only solace for himself and his adopted son, but soon learns that such a wish is impossible to attain as the events around them unfold.
Kinsey, orphaned at birth, wrestles with his newfound rage not realizing that its cause is tied to his unknown heritage.
A tale of adventure filled with dwarves and elves, men and mages, were-beasts and the undead who clash together in a conflict so vast it will consume them all. These four troubled souls will become champions in the struggle for survival, as dark forces gather to destroy them.

I waited a week before posting a review so that I could try to wrap my head around this book. I had times where I really wasn't enjoying the story and almost stopped reading it all together, but I'm glad that I didn't. The first half of the book was a little confusing because it was a bit difficult to follow. This was mainly because almost every chapter was talking about a completely different set of characters, races, and kingdoms. This is probably more because I'm fairly new to the "Fantasy" genre where there are at times a need to introduce readers to numerous accompanying characters if there is a series planned to be written. (My husband explained this to me, he's a reader of Robert Jordan.) After realizing this and the fact that the author was in fact leading to "The Gathering" of these races/characters it was quite an interesting story.Right at the half way mark the "introductions" cease and the real story begins which helped lessen my confusion. I like the protagonists that we were introduced to, Erik and Kinsey, and I definitely plan on reading Book of Kinsey (Book #2). I also like that this doesn't end in a "cliff hanger". Yes, there are unanswered questions and some new mysteries that arise at the end of this book, but that would be expected of a book that the begins a series. I was happy to see that it just didn't end abruptly like so many books do these days. This one ties most things up nicely, but still leaves questions to make you Happily want to buy the second book.Product details

Dark Fate The Gathering The Dark Fate Chronicles Book 1 eBook Matt Howerter Jon Reinke Reviews
The first book in this series was amazing, just started Book 2 last night. SPOILER ALERT
The only thing that did not work with the story was when Sloane died at the hands of Vinnicus. For me, she would have understood her sister's predicament and take her place, making up a story that Sacha died trying to escape or something like that. And I don't think Vinnicus would have killed her just like that. I think he would have let her stay with Rylan so the little girl could have a family member to turn to if she was scared. Other than that what it is, definitely worth the read.
I'll admit I was skeptical about reading this first novel, as I've read famous writer's first efforts and found them... sub-par. I was ever so pleasantly surprised in this gem of a book! I truly could not put it down.
As you read The Gathering, you recognize the significance of the name. You are witnessing the aligning of forces (good central characters versus a variety of evil baddies - seen and unseen) for an epic battle to come in a later book. I know what you're thinking... all build-up and no payoff? Not so! This book is an excellent read in its own right. The world is richly rendered, the relationships are plausible and entertaining, and the subplots are interesting in their own rights. These gentlemen have the ability to paint vivid mental images, as well as convey deep - and sometimes painful - emotion. (I was blushing for the princess in her revealing riding gear, and near tears for the poor mother torn from her child.)
At the bargain Price of $2.99, I was treated to one of the better books I've read in some time. (And I'm ready for the next book, guys!) So if you're reading this review to determine if you should buy the book, I say GO FOR IT! I've been trying to come up with another franchise to compare it to, but I'm really stumped because I think it's unique in the best kind of way. Well done, gentlemen! Now go write me another book!
A great cast of characters, well developed and crafted, make this a grand tale of adventure and magic.
The story is tight and holds together very well. It is interesting and entertaining.
However, it is but the beginning of a story. Nothing reaches an ending as such and I, personally, do not go for that. It does promise a great story and what will no doubt be adventure and if it all is half as well written as this introduction, it will be very good indeed.
I will not, however, read the rest of the series because it would be very discouraging to find other cliffhangers at the end of the other installments.
A good and entertaining story nonetheless.
I really enjoyed reading this book! The scope of the characters was very large, the characters were given some good depth and backstory and were very interesting to follow. I enjoyed how you could see the story developing from several different characters perspectives, and that they all blended fairly well. The allusions to a prophecy, but no strong mention/reveal of it was a little frustrating, as it didn't give you the full view on some characters motives, but it definitely leads me to want to read the next book and see exactly what is going on and why specific characters are following certain paths.
Howerter and Reinke have made a great start. They've created a genuine world with a believable social structure. The book is also very descriptive - of nature, facial expression and the ambient - without being too wordy. Just the right verbs seem to land on just the right prose and I found it refreshing. People are believable too. The friendship between Erik and Kinsey for example seems genuine, as do other relationships in the story They come together very organically.
There are some fantasy tropes deployed but the title and the cover led me to expect that, and that's what I was looking for. There are however nice takes on the conventions - such as the brigands being mixed bands of men and goblin-kind. The authors avoided the cliche of race war in that respect. My only complaint is that the ending was somewhat ambiguous, leaving the reader hanging, but that's what sequels are for. I will definitely read the next.
The Martyr and the Prophet (The Lost Testament Book 1)
