I bought this book for my grandson who loves trains. While I didn't read it, my husband, a retired railroader, did and pronounced the book a beautiful book. He and our grandson share their love of trains. The pictures are lovely and the text is well written according to my husband.

Locomotive Caldecott Medal Book Brian Floca 9781416994152 Books Reviews

Love reading this book. The level of detail is fun for the kids and adults reading. The train sounds are a real highlight for the kids to read along with. And it wouldn't be a Brian Floca book without knowing how the potty works on a train. The rhythm and meter of the words makes this so enjoyable to read. Above and beyond the other Caldecott books we have.
If you are looking for a book to read to a small child, I would not recommend this one. The story is quite long and I can't see a child under 6 sitting long enough to finish it. That said, the pictures are beautiful and it is a nice, informative story. It is a great book for a child who is interested in trains because of the pictures alone. An early reader would probably have trouble reading the text, but they will probably enjoy having it read to them. I can see this being a book that grows with the child, from looking at the pictures as a preschooler, to having it read to them as an early elementary student, to reading to themselves as their reading skills improve. I do absolutely recommend this book, but your purpose for ordering will determine the age it is appropriate for.
Purchased for reading with my 4 year-old grandson whose dad runs freight trains. Was concerned it wouldn't hold his attention because there were many words to read and the images are past era. However, my grandson was enthralled with it. He learned some things that prompted conversation with his dad about the trains he engineers for work.

This is a wonderful picture book for kids who think they are too old for picture books. It is about the height of mid-nineteenth century technology, the steam locomotive. Two kids and their mother taking the train from Omaha, Nebraska to San Francisco. As they travel, we see what they are seeing out the train windows, we learn about the building of the railroads and the functions of each part of the train. We learn about the jobs of the conductor, the engineer and the fireman and how they keep everything running smoothly. Every part of this book, even the endpapers will have kids pouring over the details. It is part narrative, part geography and part technology. A worthy successor to the author's previous work, "Moonshot".
I can see why Locomotive won the Caldecott. This is such a beautiful book and packed full of information too. I learned a lot reading this book with my 7-year-old. More than just facts, this book really gives you a feeling for what is what like in 1869 to either work on the railroad or to be a passenger. I think this book could easily be enjoyed by a middle grader studying American history. We visited a large train museum on vacation last summer and I wish we had read this book first. Instead, we did enjoy reminiscing about things we saw on that trip that tied into this story. Anyway, fun, beautiful, informative book to be enjoyed by a large range of ages.
This book is a gem. The illustrations are gorgeous and the text is engaging. I've read this book for my child at least 30 times as a library checkout and finally decided to purchase a copy.
The book follows the journey of a train across the transcontinental railway. My little one loves it, but this is also a great read for older children learning about the railroad. The front and back of the book have additional information about tains and the transcontinental railway.

Even the cover under the book jacket has a beautiful picture of bison.

The book is well constructed.
